Research Problems

Vencil:
There is some controversy regarding the maiden name of the wife of Capt. Adam Vincell, VA militia.
In the DAR records the family (grandson and his daughter and wife) state that it is DAVIS.  I have found her in church records as ANNA MARIA_______, wife of Johan Adam Wentzel, and in VA records as MARY______, wife of Adam Vincel.

Anna Maria(Mary)______d. Jan 16, 1822, Carter Co., TN according to the same family letter and consequently the DAR applications.  She and Adam Wentzel (Vincel) were married before 1771 when their first child is born in Loudoun Co., VA.  This is according to the records of the Evangelical Church of Frederick Co., MD and Loudoun Co., VA.  The family is living in the area of Lovettsville, Loudoun Co.,VA.

Eastham/Chadwick:
After attending SLIG we came up with this idea for collaborative research projects for our group. This first one is just a practice run.  This is my family; there are numerous documents available online, most on free sites to solve this problem.

Remember good focused research begins with a specific question. What is the relationship between John Chadwick (abt 1760-1850) of North Carolina and Greenup County, Kentucky, and George Nathaniel Eastham (born 1835) of Greenup and Boyd Counties in Kentucky?

You can probably find numerous unsourced trees and information about these people online, but the purpose is to research using the GPS as much as possible. There are ample primary sources on line to answer this question. We don’t just want an answer; we are interested in the process. We will all probably have different approaches, and use different sources. That is the beauty of collaborative work-we can learn from one another. Remember to cite your sources as you go; we won’t worry about perfect format.

Hint: remember the sources we discuss in the “Researching the Revolutionary War” meeting we had, and the free online resources discussed.

This should be a fun, but helpful exercise for everyone.

We hope to continue with questions suggested by your own research. While we won’t be able to solve all the problems, we might solve a few, and in the process learn some new techniques and resources.

Feel free to contact me with any questions. For any of you who wants to participate go ahead and send in your own questions and we will use them for future exercises.
